Begin at Khast Imam Square, home to the Barak-Khan Seminary, Tila-Sheikh Mosque and the 7th-century Uthman Quran. Wander through blue-domed Chorsu Bazaar and the imposing 16th-century Kukeldash Madrasah. After lunch, visit the Museum of Applied Arts and serene Minor Mosque. Descend into the ornate Tashkent Metro, a showcase of Soviet-era art.

Board the high-speed Afrosiyob train across the Uzbek steppe to Bukhara. Explore Lab-i-Hauz, the Abdul Aziz Khan and Ulugbek Madrasahs, and the soaring Kalon Minaret. After lunch, discover the Ark Fortress, Bolo-Hauz Mosque and 9th-century Ismail Samani Mausoleum. Visit Hunarmand workshops for block printing, embroidery and wood carving.
